Romania
Alex and Heather Chalmers moved to Romania in 2005 and in 2006 began working in a village called Poiana, a small agricultural village about 15kms from Constanta, a tourist resort. In Poiana, Alex and Heather pastor the local church, which is a daughter church of the mother church Biserica Farul (The Lighthouse Church) in Constanta. Alex has recently been invited to join the Board of the mother church, which involves him in meetings and mentoring others.
In Poiana, Alex and Heather work with street children alongside another charity. For them it is important to live amongst the people they serve, rather than just dipping in and out of the community, and Poiana has been their home since 2007. There they are involved with running Children’s clubs, Youth Clubs, prayer meetings, ladies’ meetings and men’s meetings as well as the normal church events.
In addition to these regular activities, Heather and Alex provide much practical help to villagers, including providing food parcels, medication and wood for winter for needy families. They have also insulated 25 houses for families in the village reducing their fuel bills by about 30% – a significant saving for people living in poverty.
Apart from the work in Poiana, Alex and Heather regularly minister in 4 other villages, where they undertake a range of activities in after-school clubs, often working with up to 100 children during each week.
A particularly challenging area of work is with young sex workers – a troubling aspect of life in a very needy country. Heather and Alex seek to demonstrate the love of Jesus to these young women, not judging them for the way they live, but offering them help them in practical ways.
Although Romania is part of the EU, it is still a very needy country – and a country with huge contrasts between the affluent and those living in poverty more associated with third world countries. Many need help and support in accessing the essentials of life like food and medical attention.
